Congrats to Our Employee, Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Hamilton!

We’re still trying to process the UNBELIEVABLE success of our employee, gold medal-winning Olympian Matt Hamilton! We’re so lucky to have this curling champion walking among us at our World Headquarters in Middleton, Wisconsin. It truly was a “miracurl” on ice!

Upon his return from the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, we greeted him with a rousing cheer (with some of us donning fake mustaches!) and a special parking spot: Reserved for Gold Medalists Only.

We have so much we can learn from Matt like the importance of…

  1. Great teamwork: Team Shuster knew how to communicate even under extreme pressure.
  2. Focusing on the details: In curling, millimeters can make all the difference.
  3. Flawless execution: Sweden was ranked number one in the world, so there was no room for mistakes.
  4. Believing you can win despite the toughest competition in the world: We’re talking about competing against the most talented athletes in the world–and still coming out on top!

Matt, you’re an inspiration to us all!

Here’s just a highlight of the outreach activities that our employees have been a part of at company facilities around the world. Together, we are making a big difference in our local communities. A big thank you to all of our employees who contributed to these fantastic projects over the holiday season.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Every month, factory staff and workers donate their own money into a collection box in the company cafeteria. The donations benefit organizations that help persons with disabilities and the Kantha Bopha Children Hospital. Recently, the team also had a blood drive to help the people in need.

Noblesville, Indiana
For Christmas, the Noblesville plant sponsored a local family, and through the generosity of both Spectrum Brands and our local employees, we were able to provide gifts for all of the family members, food, and some much needed household supplies, such as a new kitchen faucet, auto care supplies, a George Foreman Grill and small chest freezer.

Moorpark, California
The Moorpark facility partnered with our friends at Gelson’s to support the annual toy drive for the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (Oncology Dept.). We were honored to be able to take part in making Christmas a little brighter for the brave kids fighting cancer.

Edwardsville, Illinois
The Pet facility in Edwardsville donates items to various K-9 charities supporting both active and retired K-9 heroes. Through a local STL K9 connection, we were able to assist the large K9 team of 21 active & 21 retired dogs in Jacksonville, FL.

Blacksburg, Virginia
For Christmas, the Blacksburg plant “adopted” the extended care unit of the local, Salem Virginia, Veteran’s hospital. Our employees wanted to make sure every veteran in the unit had a gift. Gift bags were 100% donated by employees. A donation to the Montgomery County Christmas Store (serving needy families in our area) was also organized. Thank you so much for your generosity and giving spirit Blacksburg Employees!

Madison, WI has the Best Work-Life Balance in the U.S.

January 18, 2018

When it comes to work-life balance, the Midwest is where it’s at! And according to SmartAsset, Madison, Wisconsin is the top dog. Spectrum Brands World Headquarters is proud to call Madison our neighbor. Many of our employees live in the Madison area. In fact, it used to be our home until we moved just a few minutes away to the suburb of Middleton.

How does one assess work-life balance? SmartAsset looked at things like average number of hours worked, average hour of weeks worked per year, average commute time, housing as a percent of income, and concentration of recreational establishments. It’s no secret that we love Madison, and this article is one of many that hits the point home!

Here’s an excerpt from the SmartAsset article.

1. Madison, Wisconsin

Our data shows that Madison has the best work-life balance in the country. Working opportunities are plentiful: The unemployment rate is only 2.2% and the city has a labor force participation rate of 86.5%. For those two metrics, Madison ranks first and second, respectively.

Workers here also have plenty to do on their time off. About 2.1% of establishments in the Madison area are dedicated to arts, entertainment or recreation, a top 10 rate. There are also plenty of places to grab a beverage and hang out with colleagues as well. Madison has the eighth-highest concentration of bars in our study.
