What To Do When You Don’t Like Your Job

Career Advice

I’m sorry. That’s about all there is to say when someone admits that they aren’t loving their job. If you are dreading going into work each day and incessantly talking about how much you dislike it over the weekend… then you know you have a problem. It’s time for a big change like a new position within your company or a new company altogether. Heck, maybe even a career change! But until you can tackle that challenge, there are a few things you can do to make a difference.

  1. Schedule things that you will look forward to during the work week. The weekdays are not just for work–schedule in some fun too! Happy hours with friends, a scenic bike ride, a guitar lesson, a tennis match, a massage…anything will do!
  2. Turn off the negativity when you walk through the door. Once you’re home, do your best to avoid complaining or commiserating. It will take some practice but overly talking about the problem won’t make it go away.
  3. Start exploring what’s out there. Casually network with friends, browse some career boards, or set up a coffee date with someone you look up to. It will give you hope that there is a solution in the near future.
  4. Take a lunch break. Eating at your desk doesn’t count! Leave the office and take some time to decompress, read a book, or grab a meal with friends. You’ll reenergize yourself for the afternoon.
  5. Don’t check out completely. Even if you’re 8thinking about leaving, remember a few things: you want your boss to write a LinkedIn recommendation for you, you want to leave the company on a good note, and you want some great things to talk about in your next interview. Use this time to prepare for your future as much as you can.
