Career Advice

2315705263_31d3aa21ba_zThese days, the occasional work-from-home day is the norm. You may telecommute every Friday or just every now and again when your schedule allows. working from home seems like a dream come true, but it’s not for everyone. In reality, it can be much more difficult to stay focused and get work done. Even though it’s supposed to be relaxing, you could easily end your work day behind schedule and more stressed out! Here are some tips to keep you focused:

  1. Create a dedicated workspace.
Not everyone has the luxury of a home office, but all you really need to get work done is a dedicated space–preferably a table and a chair, not a couch.
  2. Dress appropriately.
Even though you’re working from home, pajamas will make you feel like it’s just another lazy Sunday, not a productive work day. You don’t have to hop in a suit and tie, but definitely get dressed for the day.
  3. Turn off the distractions.
Working from home doesn’t mean you can squeeze in some TV, laundry, and grocery shopping. Every moment you spend not working is a moment, well, not working!
  4. Make a schedule.
It’s hard to stay productive when all the comforts of home are calling to you. Set “office hours” in which you’ll do nothing but focus on work during that time. In between office hours, you can take a break or tackle some chores.
  5. Create a to-do list.
It will be easier to separate your work life from your home life if you start with a to-do list. Once you’ve checked everything off your work list, you can clock out for the day and enjoy being at home!
